Enrichment Classes

July 11-15, 2016

  • Rising Kinder - 3rd grade students will attend 2, one-hour classes.

  • Rising 4th-9th grade students will attend 1, two-hour class.  

  • Classes with *'s are offered more than one week throughout the summer.

  • When filling out the sign-up form, you'll be asked to pick back-up options in case some classes don't fill.

*Rainbow Art
Grade range: K-3

Explore the rainbow through many different mediums - tie dye, paint, coloring, collage, fabric, watercolor, and more.

*Around the World

Grade range: K-3

 

Each day, students will "visit" another country and experience traditional activities, visuals, snacks and the language of that country's predominate culture. Each week of culture club will target a variety of countries/cultures around the world, including referencing some books and informational links for students to explore. Students are expected to gain a broader knowledge of human traditions, encouraging an acceptance and appreciation of the diversity of our beautiful human race.

*American Sign Language (ASL)

Grade range: K-3

 

Leran to speak with your hands and listen with you eyes! American Sign Language is the language of Deaf Americans..  We'll learn basic fingerspelling, play games, watch and try out sign language storytelling and learn about Deaf Culture and the history of ASL. Each class will have a different theme, but will also include basics so no previous knowledge or experience is needed.

*Nature Art
Grade range: K-3

 

Explore nature and feel inspired! Each day we will explore our surrounding envrionment in a different way, with the purpose of discovering more about who we are and how we are connected to the natural world.  We will walk, discover, talk about what we are experiencing, and then CREATE! We will deepen these experiences with poetry and literature inspired by nature and field trips to places such as Botanical Gardens, Warren Wilson, and WNC Nature Center.  The week will culminate with a project that each student can leave with - a chapbook, collage, or photo gallery that reflects their experience exploring and connecting with the natural world.

*Zentangle
Grade range: 2-3 only
 

Zentangle is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun method of creating beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. This method of drawing is enjoyed all over the world, across a wide range of skills, interests and ages. When people engage their minds in creating Zentangle patterns, they often feel more focused and relaxed. Others feel sparks of creativity, artistic satisfaction, and a sense of personal well being.

Grade range: 3-9 only

 

Puff the Magic Muffin: Explorations of Baking Science

In this session, we'll study what makes things rise in the kitchen. Using the scientific method, we'll test our theories about yeasts, starters and various baking ingredients. Our explorations will yield answers to our questions, as well as tasty and nutritious things to eat. Herb biscuits (with homemade butter, of course), yeasty rolls, garlicky pizza dough, healthy muffins and more. The week's activities will include harvesting from our garden to create fruit and vegetable side dishes and toppings for our creations. We'll take a field trip to a local bakery to speak with a master bread baker and fire up our pizza oven on Friday to prepare pizzas (with home made dough, of course). Parents and sibling are welcome to join us for this lunch time Friday feast!

*Forest Hi-Flyers

Grade range: 4-9

 

Designed for the serious adventurer, learn and practice the skills you need to climb and traverse the ropes among the treetops. Additionally, members of this club will have the opportunity to work towards belay certification for the climbing wall. Let's play on the Evergreen Beanstalk Forest!

Let's Get Wild

Grade range: 4-9

 

Students will learn about the many things animals need in order to survive.  Be prepared for all hands-on adventures around Evergreen's campus as campers study animal adapations, pollution tolerance, native species and plants - all while practicing the Leave No Trace ethic and learning how to collect, observe, and analyze data.

*Mosaic Masterpiece
Grade range: 4-9

 

Campers will create a tile mosaic exploring the use of color and working on a self-chosen subject. Mosaics will be carefully planned, then students will learn to adhere tile and grout. Completed projects will be wonderful to display or use as trivets for the kitchen.  They also make great gifts!!!

Boil, Bubble, Toil and Trouble - Potions Class, Year 1

Grade range: 4-9

 

Students will channel their favorite Harry Potter character and join Potions class at Hogwarts to experiment with a variety of mixtures and chemical reactions. Students will receive vials to create their own collection of potions ingredients (basilisk venom, ground hippogriff claws, etc.). They will follow recipe instructions to create their potions -- some lovely, some disgusting -- and they will follow in the footsteps of the Half-Blood Prince, tweaking the recipes to see what happens. In this context of fun mischief-making, students will practice following written instructions, measuring carefully, and designing and carrying out experiments. (All materials are non-toxic household materials known to muggles as dish soap, baking soda, etc.)
